Is there a Yogic Aid to Digestion?

In general we can say sattvic food is easy to digest. For some people lentil and bean dishes may create a problem with gas. To avoid or minimize this, asafetida (hink) is added during the cooking process to aid in digestion.

Another way is the yogic way. If you like the relaxing and calming way of meditation, here are a posture and hand gestures that influence energies in absorption, elimination and detoxification which you can practice after each meal.

Sit for about 5 – 10 minutes with eyes closed in vajrasana, use the pushan mudra, and bring your awareness to the manipuraka chakra.

  1. Vajrasana step by step:
Be on your hands and knees. Bring knees and feet together and sit your buttocks down on your heels. Place your hands on your lap. Look straight ahead and keep your eyes closed. This helps you sit straight and keeps room for proper digestion.
  2. Pushan mudra step by step:
Sit comfortably in vajrasana with your hands on your lap, palms facing up.
Right hand: join the tip of the thumb with the ring finger and little finger.
Left hand: join the tip of the thumb with the ring finger and middle finger.
  3. Place your awareness on the manipuraka chakra (solar plexus)in the navel region where the digestive organs are located. Sit like this for 5 – 10 minutes.

Try this for a few days and see how it helps with your digestion and how the meditative calm engulfs you. If you like it simply continue with this practice.
